Chapter 6

All in all, it was a truly glorious weekend. Although he knew that she was up for quite some time in the middle of the night, they still lazed around in bed until late in the morning—mostly because they couldn't seem to get enough of each other. Then they took a long walk on La Jolla beach, followed as much of the coast as they could, since she'd let him know that one of the things she'd loved the best about living in New England was being near the ocean. She'd literally hung out the window of the car like an unabashed tourist while he drove. They ate hot dogs from Daddy's Dogs, which he found hilariously appropriate, and steak that melted into her mouth at a wonderful restaurant—that she could never afford—for dinner before heading back to the hotel.

They were in the elevator when someone recognized him and asked to take a selfie, in which she was not included. He was very polite and nice to the guy. They let him off at his floor, then headed up to their own.

"I'm sorry if that was awkward or uncomfortable for you," he said as soon as the doors closed.

"No, why would it be?"

She did sound perfectly fine with it. "I don't know. I just wanted to make sure you weren't feeling that way. I'm not all that well-known, so I don't get recognized that often, but it does sometimes happen."

Liv shrugged. "It's not a problem for me."

"Good. Sometimes people don't like that happening when they're with me."

"People" meant other women, of course. Well, it wasn't as if she didn't know that he'd been with other women, and it wasn't as if she didn't have ex-boyfriends. She'd never been particularly jealous of the woman the men in her life had seen previously—as long as they weren't seeing them concurrently with her when they'd promised each other that they would be monogamous.

When they got off on their floor, Liv headed to her room.

"Do you want me to come over to your place tonight?" Rigg asked, not wanting to spend even just a few minutes away from her.

"No, I'll be over there shortly."

She ended up taking a long, hot shower, putting on the fluffy white robe that the hotel supplied, lying down on the bed and turning on the TV, intending just to take a bit of a break before she tackled her wet hair. Instead, she apparently fell asleep.

The phone woke her an hour or so later.

"Are you okay?" were the first words out of his mouth.

"Yes."

"I've been worried about you. I've texted you multiple times, I tried to Facetime you, I messaged you on Facebook…"

"I'm sorry. I took a shower and fell asleep. Like you, once I get to sleep, I'm pretty bomb-proof."

"Yeah, that's why I delayed calling you this long. I'm very sorry to have awakened you, but I was worried."

"It's okay. Do you want me to come over?"

He really did, but he also wanted what was best for her.
